Mission Creek Preserve Trail – December 24, 2022

A relatively easy 3.2 mile out and back with just over 150 feet of elevation gain for a Christmas Eve hike. Temperature was in the mid 70’s (F) and there was a lovely breeze from the east-southeast. Kiara and Jax were along, and we had a great hike. Not a lot of hikes allow dogs but this one does. A lot of dogs on the trail for Jax to meet, greet and sniff.

The Mission Creek strand of the San Andreas fault is one of up to six strands that it splits into along this part of the fault. The current thinking is that the Mission Creek Strand has had the most movement over the last 5 to 6 million years. Some of the later pictures in the collection show the tortured rock in the western portion of the Creek. Mission Creek itself is intermittent flowing in some areas and not in others due to water movement up along the fault traces and then infiltrating and disappearing into the stream bed.

Merry Christmas to all and a Happier New Year.

Joshua Tree – Split Rock Trail December 7, 2022

After reconnoitering with Joy and Larry, we decided that today’s hike would be Split Rock Trail, a 2-mile loop near Jumbo Rock and Skull Rock. It was a little cooler than in October with temps in the high 40’s to low 50’s. I picked a trail with no shade and the sun helped us stay warm while hiking. A great trail, with only a couple of sections not well marked that Joni was able to navigate as the lead. As always, I way overdid the number of photos, but the granite and pegmatites were just awesome along with the regular Joshua Tree scenery.

We Find Marilyn! – November 30, 2022

Every Thursday night, Palm Springs has a street fair where the close off four blocks of Palm Canyon Drive which is the center of downtown commerce and may excellent restaurants. They have arts, crafts, items for sale, entertainment and food vendors and it is extremely well attended. We went when Joy and Larry were here visiting and again last Thursday. Only one photo for this excursion!

The burning question that had Palm Springs in an uproar — Is she wearing panties??

Andreas Canyon – November 25, 2022

Another reconnaissance hike in the Indian Canyons. A 1-mile loop that Joni and I had on our list. Better yet, got to do it with Mollie, Olive and Bear! I keep using the same superlatives over and over so refer back to previous posts. Not overly crowded for a Black Friday hike! Finished with a stop at La Michoacana for some ice cream!

Coachella Nature Preserve – November 23, 2022

Another spot on the list of places to visit. Mollie, Olive and Bear here to enjoy it with us. A short 25-minute drive from Taos Ct. and we were there. Nice trails – a little crowded on the day before Thanksgiving. Great hike thorough the desert and back through the date palm grove. Must be right along the Mission Creek Strand of the San Andreas Fault. Then lunch at Bubba’s!

Living Desert Wild Lights – November 22, 2022

A very nice display of lights in a very nice venue …. with cocktails. Animals were all checking to see if they were getting paid overtime. The rhinos, giraffes, mountain sheep, springboks and the nocturnal varmints were out. About 1/3 of the grounds were decorated. Marshmallow roasting for kids, cocktails, hot chocolate and grilled fare for the family. A little chilly but very well done and fun to see.

Cathedral City Balloon Fiesta November 20, 2020

Billing itself as the sixth largest balloon fiesta in the world (but shooting higher) provided a fun Sunday morning experience. The balloons launched from the Aqua Caliente Casino lots and headed south southeast. A great location that allowed unlimited access to the launch area… the plus to being only sixth. The static display of shaped balloons was at the Big League Dreams location which also allowed full access to the fields. If you had $10 extra, you could get what looked to be a pretty good pancake breakfast. Favorites there included the black sheep, the owl, the unicorn and all of the small “model” balloons.

Living Desert Part Deux – November 15, 2022

Gave Living Desert a try on a cooler morning and it worked out. More of the animals out and about. Also was a much cooler day for the human visitors. As such, it was more crowded than we have experienced, but still very relaxing and far from over-crowded. It was fun because there were a lot of younger kids there with parents and grandparents enjoying all of the animals.

Staying with tradition, Joni found us the number 4 rated restaurant in Palm Desert for lunch after we got 7000+ steps in at the zoo. Kitchen 86 on El Paseo was very good, the service was above average, and Joni said the cocktail was great!

Palm Canyon – November 4, 2022

Our first hike without Larry and Joy. A short, relatively flat 2 miler up Palm Canyon located in the Agua Caliente Canyon Parks area just south of Palm Springs. Great geology! Great Scenery! Great palms everywhere. Met some interesting people. A couple from Switzerland was enjoying the last few days of their visit and we ran into a group called Road Scholars which I am going to have to do a little research on.

After hike found a great hamburger place and rewarded our 8,600+ steps toward protecting ourselves from Alzheimer’s.
